Mastering Fraction Arithmetic
Fractions represent part of a whole number, written as a numerator (top number) divided by a denominator (bottom number). Our calculator simplifies arithmetic across proper fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers with step-by-step explanations.
Rules for Fraction Operations
- Addition & Subtraction: Fractions must share a Least Common Denominator (LCD). We find the LCM of denominators, convert each fraction, and add/subtract numerators.
- Multiplication: Simply multiply numerators together and denominators together: (a/b) × (c/d) = (a×c)/(b×d).
- Division: Invert the second fraction and multiply (reciprocal rule): (a/b) ÷ (c/d) = (a/b) × (d/c).
- Simplification: Reduce fractions to lowest terms by dividing numerator and denominator by their Greatest Common Divisor (GCD).
